House
Southern 1895 Victorian Plantation
This beautiful Victorian house was built of pine, timbered on the property,
and shaped with a portable steam-driven sawmill. On the six-foot deep wrap
around porch we see evidence of the handcrafting that went into the house.
The spindles were hand turned on a steam driven lathe. As we sight down the
balustrade we see variations in the profiles of the spindles. Looking to the
gables we some of the additional details that were built into the house (See
the pictures). The house has been lived in and maintained by the family from
its completion until 2007. Originally heated with multiple fireplaces, it now
uses baseboard hot water radiators. A bathroom has been added and kitchen updated.
Re-roofed with high quality shingles within the past five years. Interior walls
are painted beaded board. Ceilings measure nine feet nine inches. Eight foot
wide, twenty-one foot long entry hall. Four bedrooms; two with built-in closets.
Seventy-five feet of wrap around covered porch and a 14 x 9 enclosed porch.
Two utility rooms. Five out-buildings, including a log and plank barn from
the 1850s.
Large white pines line the drive leading to several aged oaks, one of which
may be as old as the 1850's log barn which sits behind the house. Azaleas,
some planted in the 1950's, surround the house and do well in the shaded front
yard.
Midway between Asheville and Charlotte (about 1 hour travel), midway between
Forest City and Boiling Springs( about 15 minutes travel).
